North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has declared that the country’s capacity for producing weapons-grade nuclear materials has more than doubled over the past five years. During a recent visit to a newly established facility for nuclear material production, he outlined a plan aimed at enhancing the nation’s nuclear capabilities.
The exact location of this facility has not been disclosed by North Korean state media. Photographs released show Kim inspecting what appears to be an enrichment plant, which analysts speculate could be a new site within the Yongbyon nuclear complex.
In addition to the facility visit, Kim introduced a special “action plan” intended to qualitatively and quantitatively strengthen North Korea’s nuclear forces. However, specific details regarding this plan were not provided in the official announcement.
Recent reports have indicated that North Korea is receiving financial support and technology from Russia, potentially in exchange for sending North Korean troops to assist in the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian intelligence has suggested that this cooperation includes technology transfers aimed at enhancing North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
On December 4, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed these reports, stating that Russia is supplying North Korea with technologies for its missile and nuclear programs in return for military support.
Earlier this year, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned of a significant increase in North Korea’s nuclear weapon production capabilities, noting heightened activity at key nuclear sites.
Kim Jong Un has announced a significant increase in North Korea's nuclear material production capacity, revealing a new facility and a plan to enhance nuclear forces. This development comes amid reports of cooperation between North Korea and Russia regarding military and nuclear technology.
