In a recent incident, Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) experienced a temporary power outage due to a drone strike on a nearby electrical substation. This marks the 17th such occurrence, raising ongoing concerns about nuclear safety amid the ongoing conflict.
The drone targeted the Nikopol substation, situated across the Dnipro River from the ZNPP. As a result, the plant lost its sole external power supply for approximately 20 minutes.
In response to the outage, emergency diesel generators were automatically activated, ensuring that the facility continued to receive power during the disruption. Shortly before midnight, technicians managed to restore the external power line, allowing the generators to be shut down.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed serious concerns regarding the incident. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized the persistent threats to nuclear safety posed by the ongoing war. He reiterated the urgent need for military restraint to prevent any risk of a nuclear accident.
