Hungary Signals Potential Support for Ukraine’s EU Membership Bid

Four European diplomats have indicated that Budapest may be prepared to lift its objections to Ukraine’s application for European Union membership. This shift could allow both Ukraine and Moldova to progress to the next phase of EU integration, which involves the opening of the first negotiation cluster, marking the official commencement of accession talks.

According to sources from Politico, a decision on this matter could be reached during an intergovernmental conference scheduled for June 15 in Luxembourg. The potential compromise is reportedly linked to recent discussions between Ukrainian and Hungarian experts concerning the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

During these talks, Ukraine presented proposals addressing most of the demands previously raised by the government of Viktor Orbán. One diplomat noted that Hungary’s approval does not hinge on the immediate enactment of new laws in Ukraine, suggesting that some issues could be resolved through ongoing consultations.

However, Budapest has not yet officially confirmed any change in its stance. An anonymous Hungarian official stated, “No decision has been made. Negotiations are ongoing. No agreements have been reached.”

By the end of this week, EU ambassadors are expected to finalize their position regarding the opening of the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova. Before this can happen, Kyiv must present updated reform plans and additional measures to protect the rights of national minorities.

Ultimately, any decision to open a negotiation cluster requires unanimous support from all 27 EU member states.

Budapest may soon lift its objections to Ukraine's EU membership application, potentially allowing both Ukraine and Moldova to advance in their integration efforts. A decision could be made at an upcoming conference in Luxembourg, contingent on Kyiv's updated reform proposals.
