The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has intensified its drone operations targeting critical infrastructure within Russia, leading to significant financial repercussions for the Russian government. According to political analyst Oleksiy Kurpas, these operations have created a substantial budgetary shortfall for Russia, which is struggling to manage the economic fallout.
Kurpas highlighted that June 1 marked the one-year anniversary of the SBU’s notable operation, dubbed “Pavutyina.” This initiative has reportedly changed the landscape of warfare, demonstrating that Ukrainian forces can strike anywhere in Russia. He noted that in just one day last year, Russia incurred losses in aviation valued at approximately $7 billion, and the cumulative losses over the past year have been even greater.
The analyst pointed out that recent drone attacks have reached a new level of effectiveness, with the SBU consistently identifying vulnerabilities within the Russian fuel and energy sectors. These strikes not only cause immediate physical damage but also contribute to long-term economic consequences that extend beyond the cost of the drone operations themselves.
Kurpas emphasized that the SBU’s drone campaigns hold both military and strategic significance. They not only impose additional burdens on the Russian budget but also create unforeseen expenses, thereby diminishing Russia’s capacity to sustain its military efforts. Public discussions within Russia about the budgetary shortfall indicate a growing concern about the financial implications of these ongoing attacks. If the current rate of strikes continues, the financial gap is expected to widen faster than the Kremlin can address it through oil and gas revenues and reserves.
Recent reports indicate that the SBU has successfully targeted several strategic Russian facilities, including the Yaroslavl-3 oil refinery, a gas terminal in the port of Temryuk, a key electronic reconnaissance site in Krasnodar Krai, and an important oil depot in Armavir.
