World Long Jump Record Changes Hands Twice in 24 Hours

In a remarkable turn of events, the world-leading mark in men’s long jump shifted twice within a single day. Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou initially set the season’s best at the Cyprus International Athletics Meeting, only for Swiss decathlete Simon Ehammer to surpass it shortly thereafter.

Tentoglou achieved a jump of 8.49 meters in his fifth attempt, marking his best performance since June 2024 and the sixth of his career. This leap not only established a new world-leading result for the 2026 season but also elevated Tentoglou to the top of the global rankings, having previously jumped 8.46 meters at the Diamond League event in Xiamen just a week prior.

However, Tentoglou’s record stood for less than 24 hours. At the meeting in Götzis, Austria, Ehammer, competing in the decathlon, recorded a jump of 8.51 meters in his second attempt. This achievement not only set a new world-leading mark but also established a world record for the decathlon event, surpassing Ehammer’s own previous record of 8.45 meters, which he had set at the same venue in 2022.

Ehammer’s jump is now recognized as the longest in the world over the past two years, with Tentoglou having previously set a personal best of 8.65 meters at the 2024 European Championships.

Top 5 World Results for the 2026 Season

  • Simon Ehammer (Switzerland) — 8.51 m
  • Miltiadis Tentoglou (Greece) — 8.49 m
  • Miltiadis Tentoglou (Greece) — 8.46 m
  • Mattia Furlani (Italy) — 8.37 m
  • Wayne Pinnock (Jamaica) — 8.34 m

The men's long jump witnessed two record-breaking performances within a day, first by Miltiadis Tentoglou and then by Simon Ehammer, highlighting the competitive nature of the sport. Ehammer's jump not only set a new season best but also a world record for decathlon.
