U.S. Seizes $1 Billion in Cryptocurrency Linked to Iran

The United States has confiscated approximately $1 billion in cryptocurrency associated with Iran, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. This action is part of a larger strategy aimed at disrupting funding sources for the Iranian government.

In a recent interview on Fox Business, Bessent explained that U.S. authorities successfully seized digital wallets linked to Iran. This operation is categorized under “Operation Economic Fury,” which seeks to limit Iran’s access to international revenue, banking systems, and digital asset frameworks.

The Treasury’s press release elaborated on the initiative, stating that it also includes measures against Iran’s clandestine banking networks and sanctions on entities supplying military resources to Tehran. Additionally, an Iraqi official involved in oil sales with Iran-backed militias has been designated for sanctions.

Bessent noted that the ongoing pressure campaign has exacerbated economic difficulties within Iran. Reports indicate that military personnel are facing unpaid wages, police officers are not showing up for duty, and inflation rates have soared beyond 200%. In response to these challenges, Iranian authorities have begun distributing food vouchers and implementing internet shutdowns.

Furthermore, the Treasury Secretary mentioned that the U.S. and its allies are focusing on targeting foreign real estate and other assets that they believe have been misappropriated from the Iranian populace. He highlighted that prior to these interventions, Iranian officials were reportedly transferring hundreds of millions of dollars monthly.

The U.S. has taken significant steps to disrupt Iran's financial networks by seizing $1 billion in cryptocurrency. This move is part of a broader initiative to limit Tehran's access to global revenue and has intensified the economic strain on the Iranian government.
