Sweden has officially committed to providing Ukraine with 16 Gripen fighter jets, alongside plans to sell an additional 22 new models. This announcement was made during a signing ceremony between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at an airbase in Uppsala, aimed at enhancing defense collaboration between the two nations.
The transfer includes 16 used Gripen aircraft of the C and D variants, which Sweden will provide at no cost. In addition, Ukraine is in negotiations to acquire 22 new Gripen jets, with discussions expected to conclude by 2030.
Prime Minister Kristersson stated, “We are transferring Gripen. Ukraine will purchase 22 new models of Gripen.” The timeline for the delivery of these aircraft indicates that the first Gripens are set to arrive in 2027, although President Zelensky expressed hopes for an expedited delivery within the next ten months.
Regarding the choice of Gripen jets, the Swedish government highlighted their long-term suitability for Ukraine’s air defense needs. Kristersson noted that while Soviet-era aircraft have provided some reconnaissance and radar capabilities, the Gripen jets represent a more effective solution for safeguarding Ukrainian airspace.
This move follows Sweden’s earlier provision of Hawk missile systems to Ukraine, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s air defense capabilities. “Air defense is what Ukraine needs most right now. We feel this almost daily,” Kristersson emphasized.
President Zelensky further asserted Ukraine’s commitment to acquiring a total of 150 fighter jets, stating, “We are counting on these 90 billion (from Europe). We will do this step by step. We need these aircraft, and for Ukraine, this is a new chapter.”
Sweden has announced the transfer of 16 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine and plans to sell 22 additional new models. This initiative aims to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities amid ongoing security challenges.
