Petr Poroshenko, the fifth president of Ukraine and leader of the European Solidarity party, recently met with current President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Iryna Herashchenko, a member of parliament from European Solidarity, the meeting did not involve any requests from Poroshenko.
Herashchenko stated that the primary topics of discussion included the ongoing war, peace efforts, Ukraine’s European integration, the role of parliament, and democratic principles. She emphasized that Poroshenko spoke as a statesman, highlighting the importance of democracy and respect for the presidential institution.
“Poroshenko did not make any requests… He spoke globally about the necessity of democracy and respect for the institution of the presidency,” Herashchenko remarked during an interview on Radio Svoboda.
She also noted that some details of the meeting would remain confidential due to prior agreements. “We always adhere to the agreements with Bankova. Colleagues in parliament will confirm that certain details of this meeting will stay off the record,” she added.
The meeting lasted nearly two hours, contrasting with previous discussions Zelensky held with other political factions. Herashchenko highlighted that the focus was on strategic issues critical to the country.
On May 26, Poroshenko announced that this was the first conversation with Zelensky in many years. He indicated that such meetings with leaders of parliamentary factions would become a regular occurrence, fostering ongoing dialogue.
In February of the previous year, the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) imposed sanctions against Poroshenko, marking a significant political development. Poroshenko confirmed the sanctions were directed at him personally.
Human rights organizations condemned the imposition of personal sanctions against Ukrainian citizens, arguing that such measures against opposition politicians and business figures constitute a form of extrajudicial political retribution. They asserted that these actions undermine fundamental legal principles and violate both the Constitution and international agreements ratified by Ukraine.
The recent meeting between Petr Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelensky centered on key national issues, including war, peace, and democracy. While details remain confidential, the discussions signal a potential shift towards more regular political dialogue in Ukraine.
