Ukrainian Security Services Arrest Cleric for Alleged Espionage Linked to March 2024 Missile Strikes

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a cleric from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) on charges of aiding Russian military operations during a dual missile strike on Odesa in March 2024.

According to the SBU, the cleric allegedly provided coordinates that led to a Russian attack on a recreational area in the port city, resulting in significant civilian casualties. The first missile struck residential buildings and local infrastructure, targeting what the cleric believed were military personnel. A second strike occurred shortly after, as emergency services responded to the initial attack. Following the strikes, the cleric reportedly communicated the outcomes of the assault back to the Russian military intelligence.

In addition to the missile strikes, the SBU claims the cleric transmitted information regarding the locations of Ukrainian air defense forces protecting the Odesa region during the attacks. He also allegedly shared details about an electrical substation near Odesa, including its security systems, and informed Russian military officials about the damage caused by a subsequent strike on that facility.

The cleric was arrested at his residence in Odesa and has been charged with treason under wartime conditions. He is currently held in custody without the option for bail, facing a potential life sentence and asset confiscation. The SBU has not disclosed the cleric’s name or his current stance on the allegations.

The missile strikes on March 15, 2024, resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals, with many others injured. Ukrainian authorities have been actively apprehending individuals suspected of espionage, particularly those believed to be collaborating with Russian intelligence services.

The SBU has arrested a cleric for allegedly aiding Russian military strikes in Odesa, which resulted in significant civilian casualties. The cleric faces serious charges of treason and could face life imprisonment.
