Poland Summons Russian Ambassador Amid Escalating Threats to Kyiv

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Russian Ambassador Georgiy Mikhno following Moscow’s threats to intensify strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. This diplomatic action underscores Poland’s firm stance against what it views as unjustified aggression from Russia.

Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wewiór stated, “Like other countries, we have summoned the Russian ambassador to convey our position regarding these threats, or warnings, as the Russian Federation refers to them.” He emphasized that Poland cannot accept such threats, particularly in light of Russia’s characterization of its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation” rather than a war.

Wewiór articulated that if Russia claims to be conducting a special military operation, then its objectives should be strictly military in nature. He remarked, “We cannot agree to this. We clearly convey that since Russia asserts it is not waging war but conducting a special military operation, the scope of these objectives should be limited to military targets.”

Additionally, the Polish government conveyed a strong message to the Russian ambassador, demanding an immediate cessation of what it considers unwarranted and illegal aggression, urging compliance with international obligations and treaties. Wewiór noted that the ambassador accepted the Polish position.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ actions were coordinated with other European partners, as Wewiór mentioned, “We are acting together with our partners, who have also summoned their Russian embassy counterparts on their territories.” This collaboration reflects a unified European response to the escalating crisis.

Contextually, this diplomatic move follows a significant escalation in hostilities, as Russia launched a large-scale offensive on Kyiv and its surrounding region on Sunday. Official reports indicate that the assault resulted in four fatalities and around one hundred injuries.

In a preliminary statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the initiation of a series of methodical strikes targeting various sites in Kyiv. In light of this, the Kremlin has advised its diplomatic personnel to evacuate the Ukrainian capital as soon as possible.

Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian ambassador in response to threats of intensified strikes on Kyiv. This action aligns with a broader European diplomatic effort to address escalating tensions following Russia's recent military actions in Ukraine.
