Emergency Evacuation in California Due to Chemical Threat at GKN Aerospace

An emergency evacuation is underway in California following a potential explosion risk at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency as rescue teams and experts work to prevent a possible chemical disaster.

The incident occurred at the GKN Aerospace plant, located approximately 30 miles from Los Angeles, where a tank containing methyl methacrylate—a flammable and toxic substance used in plastics and aerospace manufacturing—has been identified as a concern.

According to officials from the Orange County Fire Authority, the temperature inside the tank is rising at a rate of about one degree per hour. They warned that an explosion or breach could release up to 7,000 gallons of this hazardous material into the environment.

As a precaution, evacuation orders have been issued for tens of thousands of residents in the area. Temporary shelters in Anaheim, Fountain Valley, La Palma, and Huntington Beach are reportedly at capacity.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Orange County and urged residents to comply with evacuation orders.

Firefighters have enlisted the help of experts from across the state, including specialists from the chemical manufacturer, to stabilize the situation. Efforts are focused on cooling the tank with water and preparing systems to contain any potential leaks to prevent contamination of storm drains, rivers, or the ocean.

GKN Aerospace has stated that they are cooperating with relevant authorities and have apologized to local residents for the forced evacuation.

Medical professionals have warned that prolonged exposure to methyl methacrylate vapors can lead to serious respiratory issues. However, current air quality monitoring has not detected dangerous levels of the toxic fumes.

A state of emergency has been declared in California due to a potential explosion risk at GKN Aerospace, prompting the evacuation of thousands. Authorities are working to stabilize the situation and prevent a chemical leak.
