Trump to Discuss Iran Negotiations Amid Potential Decision on Military Action

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to meet with key advisors today to discuss Iran’s latest proposals, with a decision regarding potential military action expected by tomorrow.

On May 23, Trump will convene with Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside Vice President J.D. Vance, to assess recent developments concerning Iran. The President indicated that there is an equal chance—50 percent each—for either reaching a “favorable” agreement or escalating military action against Iran.

“I think one of two things will happen: either I will strike them harder than ever before, or we will sign a favorable deal,” Trump stated.

The new proposal under consideration is a result of negotiations between Iran and Pakistan. Additionally, sources from Axios report that Trump will engage with leaders from Gulf nations today to discuss the situation with Iran, with participants expected to include the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, and Turkey.

Based on Trump’s comments, a decision regarding the resumption of military engagement is likely to be made by Sunday.

In a related development, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that Iran and the U.S. are nearing the final stages of negotiations on a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict. He noted that this document would address the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of U.S. sanctions, and the unblocking of Iranian assets.

Baghaei added that following this, a period of negotiations for a comprehensive final agreement would commence, lasting between 30 to 60 days.

Trump, in remarks to Axios, emphasized that he would only agree to a deal that includes provisions on uranium enrichment and the status of Iran’s existing stockpiles. However, these issues are unlikely to be resolved within the framework of the current memorandum, which is focused on an immediate cessation of hostilities and the initiation of more extensive negotiations.

Baghaei also mentioned that discussions regarding nuclear issues would be postponed until the aforementioned negotiations take place within the next 30 to 60 days, as the current memorandum aims to swiftly end the conflict.

Axios reports that intermediaries such as Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan have been actively working over the past 24 hours to bridge the gaps between the involved parties.

President Trump is set to meet with advisors to discuss Iran's proposals, with a decision on military action anticipated soon. Negotiations between Iran and the U.S. are reportedly in the final stages, focusing on a memorandum aimed at ending hostilities.
