On Saturday evening, a shooting occurred near a security checkpoint close to the White House, resulting in the death of the assailant and serious injuries to a bystander.
The incident unfolded around 6:00 PM local time when an unidentified individual approached the checkpoint and opened fire on U.S. Secret Service officers. In response, the Secret Service returned fire, injuring the shooter, who later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
A bystander was also caught in the crossfire and is currently in critical condition. It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the initial shots from the assailant or during the exchange of gunfire.
Fortunately, no Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident. At the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was in the White House residence and was not harmed.
In response to the threat, a lockdown was swiftly implemented at the White House. Journalists present on the North Lawn were evacuated to the press center and instructed to remain indoors. Armed agents secured the area until the lockdown was lifted around 6:45 PM.
The FBI confirmed that agents were dispatched to the scene to assist the Secret Service. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances and motives behind the shooter’s actions.
