Ukraine Allocates Funding for Modernization of Specialized High Schools

The Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science has announced the first wave of specialized high schools that will receive funding to create modern educational environments by 2026. This initiative aims to enhance the practical learning experience for students across various scientific disciplines.

According to the ministry’s order No. 818, issued on May 21, 2026, a total of 459.3 million hryvnias will be allocated for the establishment of advanced laboratories and STEM spaces. The focus will primarily be on upgrading classrooms for physics, chemistry, biology, and integrated natural science courses.

Officials emphasized that the primary goal is to equip schools with resources that allow students to apply theoretical knowledge through research and experimentation. This approach is intended to foster a more hands-on learning environment.

The selection of schools for funding was conducted using a ranking system that considered several factors, including student enrollment numbers, safety conditions, staffing adequacy, experience in specialized education, and partnerships with universities and employers. Additionally, the ability to provide transportation for students and staff or accommodations for students in dormitories was also taken into account.

The Ministry of Education and Science reiterated that in 2026, the government is committed to a comprehensive overhaul of educational spaces. This effort will not only involve the purchase of new equipment but also the modernization of furniture and facilities.

In total, the state budget for 2026 allocates 3.2 billion hryvnias for school modernization. The breakdown of this funding is as follows:

  • 1.2 billion hryvnias will be directed towards pilot specialized high schools;
  • 1.3 billion hryvnias will be used for upgrading educational spaces in gymnasiums;
  • 700 million hryvnias will be allocated for modern educational environments in future academic high schools, which will join the network of specialized high schools in 2027.

A list of the high schools that will receive funding in this initial wave is available for review.

Additionally, the Cabinet of Ministers has earmarked 1.2 billion hryvnias for the modernization of high schools that are the first to implement the reform of specialized secondary education. The government explained that this reform aims to prepare students for specialized studies, particularly in fields such as IT, engineering, technology, and natural sciences. Separate funding has also been allocated for distance learning high schools and the enhancement of spaces for the subject “Defense of Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian government is investing significantly in the modernization of specialized high schools, focusing on practical learning in STEM fields. This funding aims to improve educational resources and facilities, preparing students for future studies in various specialized disciplines.
