Increased Radiation Detected from Russian Drone Debris in Chernihiv Region

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported elevated radiation levels found in the debris of a Russian strike drone that targeted the Chernihiv region in April 2026. This discovery follows a counterintelligence operation and investigation by the SBU.

Investigators identified fragments of an R-60 air-to-air missile near the village of Kamka, which were integrated into a modified Geran-2 drone used in an attack on April 7. Russian forces are known to deploy these missiles during extensive assaults aimed at Ukrainian aircraft and helicopters that intercept enemy drones.

During radiation reconnaissance near the drone wreckage, gamma radiation levels were recorded at 12 µSv/h, significantly exceeding natural background radiation and posing health risks to humans. In response, the SBU, in collaboration with the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and defense forces, secured the missile’s warhead and transported it to a designated radioactive waste storage facility.

Research has confirmed that the warhead of the Russian missile contains damaging elements made from depleted uranium, specifically Uranium-235 and Uranium-238. This finding has prompted the SBU to initiate a pre-trial investigation into potential war crimes under Article 438 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, with oversight from the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Given the toxicity and radioactivity of depleted uranium, citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution if they encounter drone debris, missiles, or other munitions. Damaged or burned ordnance poses the greatest threat, as it can release radioactive dust harmful to both people and the environment.

Authorities advise that individuals should not approach, touch, or move such items. Instead, they should maintain a safe distance and immediately report the discovery to the SBU, State Emergency Service, or National Police hotlines.

The SBU has detected heightened radiation levels in debris from a Russian drone attack in Chernihiv, prompting an investigation into potential war crimes. Citizens are warned to avoid contact with such debris due to health risks associated with depleted uranium.
