Greenland Reiterates Its Stance Against Sale Amid US Diplomatic Talks

The Greenlandic government has confirmed progress in talks with the United States, while firmly stating that the island will never be put up for sale. This announcement follows a meeting between U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen, alongside Foreign Minister Mute Egede.

After the discussions, Nielsen emphasized the importance of finding a solution that respects Greenland’s sovereignty. He stated,

“We believe there is progress, and from Greenland’s side, we are focused on finding a solution that is good for all of us, and importantly, there will be no threats of annexation, seizure, or purchase of Greenland and the Greenlandic people.”

While Landry has not yet made any formal statements, Egede reiterated Greenland’s position, saying,

“They requested a meeting, and we explained our situation and our stance, including our red lines—we will not sell Greenland; it will belong to Greenland forever.”

This dialogue is part of a broader diplomatic effort initiated earlier this year among Greenland, Denmark, and the U.S. to address rising tensions and stabilize relations. However, the outcomes of these discussions have not been made public.

The backdrop to these negotiations includes previous remarks by former President Donald Trump, who in late 2024 described control over Greenland as vital for U.S. national security. In response, Egede firmly stated that the island is not for sale.

Trump’s comments escalated in January 2025 when he suggested potential military or economic pressure to gain control over Greenland and the Panama Canal, calling for the island’s incorporation into the U.S. He later justified his interest in Greenland on defensive grounds.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any U.S. invasion of Greenland would signify the end of NATO. Nielsen criticized linking the island to military intervention as disrespectful.

Internationally, countries including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, Spain, and Denmark issued a joint statement asserting that regional security should be maintained collectively within NATO. On January 14, 2026, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced increased funding for potential defense measures for Greenland.

During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, Trump assured that the U.S. would not use force to gain control over the island. Subsequently, on January 29, Bloomberg reported that the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland had commenced negotiations for a new framework agreement regarding cooperation around the Arctic territory.

Greenland's government has reiterated its commitment to sovereignty, stating the island will never be sold, following diplomatic talks with the U.S. The discussions aim to address tensions stemming from previous comments by former President Trump regarding U.S. control over Greenland.
