Ukraine and Hungary Set to Begin Consultations on Minority Rights

This week, Ukraine will initiate discussions focused on the rights of the Hungarian minority within its borders. The announcement follows a conversation between Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orbán.

Kuleba expressed Ukraine’s readiness to embark on a new chapter in its relationship with Hungary, emphasizing mutual benefits. The two officials agreed on several key steps to enhance bilateral cooperation:

  • Conducting a round of expert-level consultations this week;
  • Finding practical solutions for the Hungarian minority in the Transcarpathian region;
  • Collaborating with the new Hungarian government on all matters of the bilateral agenda, including minority issues.

“Our goal is to ensure European standards and practices,” Kuleba stated.

In addition to minority rights, Kuleba addressed Ukraine’s aspirations for European integration. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to accelerating the opening of negotiation clusters for EU membership.

Furthermore, Kuleba expressed gratitude to Orbán for the swift and principled response of the Hungarian government to recent Russian attacks on Ukraine. The meeting also covered regional, European, and international issues, underlining the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing shared challenges.

Ukraine and Hungary are set to hold consultations aimed at addressing the rights of the Hungarian minority. The discussions will also touch on Ukraine's EU integration aspirations and regional cooperation.
