Google Meet has emerged as a prominent tool for video conferencing, largely due to its seamless integration within the Google ecosystem. Many users, however, may not be fully aware of the platform’s capabilities, which include automated report generation, background noise suppression, and gesture recognition.
Quick Setup and Clear Audio
For users needing to initiate a meeting swiftly, accessing Google Calendar is not necessary. By simply entering meet.new in the browser’s address bar, a blank meeting room with an invitation link opens automatically.
To ensure professional-quality calls even in public spaces, Google Meet offers built-in filters:
- Noise Cancellation: This feature filters out keyboard sounds, room echoes, or café noise, allowing only the speaker’s voice to be heard. It can be activated in the Settings – Audio section.
- Adaptive Audio Mode: When multiple colleagues are in the same room using different laptops, Meet automatically combines their microphones and speakers to prevent unpleasant feedback and echo.
AI Integration and Automation
For users of Google Workspace, the AI assistant Gemini is now available, significantly simplifying meeting management. The Take notes for me feature automatically records key points during meetings in a separate Google Doc. After the call, this document is saved to the user’s drive and attached to the corresponding Calendar event.
Additionally, Meet allows for complete automation of attendance tracking. The Attendance tracking feature sends a table listing all participants, their email addresses, and duration of attendance immediately after the meeting concludes.
Presentations and Multitasking
A common challenge in video meetings is maintaining visual contact with colleagues while presenting slides. Google Meet addresses this through its integration with Google Slides:
- Users can view their slides, participants, and chat in a single interface.
- Co-hosts can be assigned to switch slides on behalf of the presenter.
- Live annotations are available for collaborative work during presentations.
For those who need to work in another tab simultaneously, the Picture-in-Picture mode allows the video feed of colleagues to float over other windows, enabling users to see the speaker’s reactions while responding to emails.
New Levels of Interactivity: Gestures and Polling
To make online meetings and training sessions more engaging, Google has introduced gesture recognition. If a participant raises their hand in front of the camera, the application automatically detects this and activates the Raise Hand icon, provided the hand is positioned away from the face and body.
For gathering feedback in large groups of up to 1,000 participants, the Polls tool is ideal. Instead of chaotic chat discussions, users can launch polls from the Meeting Tools tab, allowing for anonymous responses that can be visualized instantly for all attendees.
Google Meet has introduced several new features aimed at enhancing user experience during virtual meetings. With tools for quick meeting setup, AI-driven note-taking, and interactive capabilities like gesture recognition and polling, the platform seeks to streamline communication and engagement.
