Germany has dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder could act as a mediator in negotiations between the EU and Russia aimed at achieving a peace agreement concerning Ukraine.
A German official stated that this proposal lacks credibility, as Russia has not altered any of its conditions. The official emphasized that the initial assessment would focus on whether Moscow is willing to extend a three-day ceasefire that was agreed upon from May 9 to May 11.
Furthermore, the official noted that Putin has made several misleading proposals intended to create divisions within the Western alliance.
It is important to highlight that after leaving office in 2005, Schröder quickly took on a controversial role in a German-Russian consortium responsible for building a gas pipeline. His close ties to Putin have drawn significant criticism within Germany.
According to Reuters, a German government spokesperson reiterated that Berlin does not perceive any signs of genuine interest from Moscow in serious negotiations. The spokesperson stressed that any discussions with the EU must be closely coordinated with member states and Ukraine.
Germany has firmly rejected Vladimir Putin's idea of appointing Gerhard Schröder as a mediator in peace talks regarding Ukraine, citing Russia's unchanged demands. Officials emphasize the necessity of coordinated negotiations with EU member states and Ukraine, highlighting a lack of genuine interest from Moscow in serious dialogue.
