Péter Mátyás Sworn in as Hungary’s New Prime Minister Following Election Victory

Péter Mátyás, leader of the Tisza party, has been sworn in as Hungary’s Prime Minister following the parliamentary elections held on April 12. His party emerged victorious, securing a significant mandate.

The inauguration took place at Kossuth Square in Budapest, where Mátyás emphasized his commitment to serving the nation rather than ruling it. In his inaugural address, he stated, “The Hungarian people have empowered us to halt decades of continuous movement, to change not only the government but the system itself. However, there can be no change in the system and justice without reconciliation, which is impossible without confrontation.”

“The Hungarian people have empowered us to halt decades of continuous movement, to change not only the government but the system itself. However, there can be no change in the system and justice without reconciliation, which is impossible without confrontation,” said Péter Mátyás in his speech.

Mátyás highlighted pressing social issues, noting that three million Hungarians live in poverty. He criticized the previous administration led by Viktor Orbán for leaving a substantial budget deficit. Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism about Hungary’s potential for renewal and unity.

António Costa, President of the European Council, extended his best wishes to Mátyás. In a statement relayed by a correspondent from the public broadcaster, he affirmed readiness to collaborate with the new Hungarian government. Costa remarked, “Europe is built on respect for sovereignty and the diversity of peoples, nations, and member states. We respect the free choice of our citizens. Sometimes they choose one leader, sometimes another.”

The parliamentary elections in Hungary saw a record voter turnout of 79.5%. Viktor Orbán, the incumbent Prime Minister and leader of the Fidesz party, acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Mátyás on his victory.

In his victory speech, Mátyás announced plans to restore cooperation with NATO and the European Union, particularly with the Visegrád Group countries. He indicated that his first official visit would be to Poland.

With 99% of the votes counted, the Tisza party, under Mátyás’s leadership, has secured enough mandates to form a constitutional majority in Parliament.

Péter Mátyás has been inaugurated as Hungary's Prime Minister after his party's victory in the recent parliamentary elections. He aims to address social issues and restore international cooperation.
