The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported that as of 11:00 AM on May 8, radiation levels across the country, particularly in northern Kyiv Oblast, remain stable.
According to information from the National Hydrometeorological Service of the State Emergency Service (SES), gamma radiation levels are within normal limits nationwide.
This announcement comes as firefighters continue to battle a large forest fire in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, which has affected over 1,100 hectares. The fire’s management is complicated by dry weather, strong winds, and the presence of landmines in certain areas, which significantly restricts firefighting efforts. In some forest sections, operations have been temporarily halted due to the risk of explosive devices.
The SES has been providing regular updates regarding fires in the exclusion zone. Notably, over 11,000 fires occurred in Ukraine’s ecosystems during the first four months of 2026.
The Ministry urges the public to rely solely on official sources for information, especially in light of conflicting reports circulating in the media.
Radiation levels in Ukraine remain stable despite a significant forest fire in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Firefighting efforts are hampered by adverse weather conditions and safety concerns.
