In the early hours of May 8, Russia conducted a significant drone assault on Ukraine, deploying 67 strike drones despite a declared ceasefire. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted most of the incoming threats.
The drone attack, which included various models such as Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and imitation drones known as Parody, originated from multiple locations, including Kursk, Oryol, Bryansk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Millerovo in Russia, and Hvardiyiske in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
Ukrainian defense forces, comprising aviation units, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare divisions, and mobile fire groups, actively engaged in repelling the aerial assault.
As of 8:00 AM, preliminary reports indicated that Ukrainian air defense systems had downed or suppressed 56 enemy drones, primarily of the Shahed type, across the southern and eastern regions of the country. Additionally, 11 strike drones were confirmed to have hit eight locations, with debris falling in seven areas.
Background on the Ceasefire
Recently, Russia unilaterally announced a ceasefire for May 8-9 to coincide with its Victory Day celebrations. In a related development, Kremlin officials threatened to launch extensive strikes on central Kyiv if Ukraine initiated attacks on Moscow during the commemorative events.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared a ceasefire starting at midnight on May 6. However, despite this initiative, Russian forces escalated their attacks, targeting cities such as Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih.
On May 7, Russia officially proclaimed a ceasefire effective from midnight on May 8 until May 10, instructing all Russian military units at the front to halt combat operations. Nevertheless, the Russian military continued its offensive actions against Ukrainian positions during the night of May 8, violating the announced ceasefire.
President Zelensky previously remarked that the upcoming military parade in Russia would depend on Ukraine’s actions, emphasizing that Ukraine would respond in kind, with future decisions hinging on the evolving situation.
Despite a declared ceasefire for May 8-9, Russia launched a drone attack on Ukraine, resulting in significant interceptions by Ukrainian air defense. The situation underscores ongoing tensions and the complexities surrounding ceasefire agreements in the conflict.
