Iran has announced the establishment of a new shipping protocol for vessels transiting through the Hormuz Strait, coinciding with the United States’ launch of its “Project Freedom” initiative aimed at securing maritime routes.
Under the newly introduced system, all vessels intending to navigate the strait must formally notify Iranian authorities. Following this notification, they will receive an email detailing the transit rules and requirements.
Vessels are required to comply with these regulations and obtain permission prior to entering the Hormuz Strait. This announcement follows recent threats from Iranian military officials, who warned of potential attacks on American vessels approaching the strait.
The threats emerged after US President Donald Trump announced the “Project Freedom” operation on May 4, which is designed to assist ships that have become stranded in the strait. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has indicated that it will deploy destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and 15,000 troops to escort vessels through the strait as part of this initiative.
Trump has stated that any interference from Iran with the operation could lead to severe repercussions. Additionally, reports from Axios indicate that the United States has privately warned Iran of its plans for the military operation in order to mitigate the risk of escalation amid a fragile ceasefire.
