Estonian City to Display Controversial Putin Banner on May 9

In Narva, Estonia, a banner depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin as Nazi leader Adolf Hitler will be displayed on the wall of the Narva Castle on May 9. This event coincides with Europe Day and serves as a poignant reminder of ongoing conflicts and alleged war crimes committed by Russia against Ukraine.

The tradition of showcasing such a banner began in 2023, with last year’s display featuring a combined image of Hitler and Putin, labeled “Putler.” This year, the banner aims to provoke reflection on the war in Ukraine and its implications for the local community.

“The banner will be placed on the flagpole of Narva Castle on May 9, Europe Day, as a reminder of the ongoing war and Russia’s military crimes against the Ukrainian people. For us, this date is not just a date; it holds significant symbolic meaning in Narva as a border town,” stated Maria Smorzhievskikh-Smirnova, director of the Narva Museum.

Additionally, an exhibition titled “Mariupol — City of Happiness, Ghost City” will open at the Narva Castle on May 7, further emphasizing the cultural and historical narratives surrounding the conflict.

Narva is strategically located on the border with Russia, separated by the Narva River. On the Russian side, preparations are underway for events celebrating the so-called Victory Day, including the installation of a stage with a screen for broadcasting related activities.

The Estonian city of Narva plans to display a controversial banner depicting Vladimir Putin as Adolf Hitler on May 9, coinciding with Europe Day. This initiative aims to highlight ongoing conflicts and Russia's actions in Ukraine, alongside an exhibition focused on Mariupol.
