Ukrainian President Discusses EU Membership with Slovak Prime Minister

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently held a conversation with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, emphasizing the significance of strong bilateral relations. The discussion, which took place on May 2, highlighted Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union.

Zelensky expressed appreciation for Slovakia’s willingness to share its accession experience, stating, “We are both interested in this.” He extended an invitation for Fico to visit Kyiv and thanked him for his invitation to Bratislava. The leaders agreed to work on scheduling a personal meeting in the near future.

Fico acknowledged the differences in their perspectives on certain issues but reaffirmed the importance of maintaining friendly relations between Slovakia and Ukraine. He stated, “I confirmed that Slovakia supports Ukraine’s EU ambitions, as we want Ukraine to be a stable and democratic neighbor.”

In a follow-up to their conversation, Fico mentioned plans for a brief meeting with Zelensky at the upcoming European Political Community summit in Yerevan on Monday. The two leaders are expected to exchange visits between Kyiv and Bratislava.

Additionally, Fico emphasized that any peace agreement regarding the military conflict with the Russian Federation must have the consent of Ukraine. This statement underscores Slovakia’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty in the ongoing conflict.

On April 16, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar indicated that Slovakia is prepared to lift its objections to a European Union loan of 90 billion euros for Ukraine, while maintaining its stance on the 20th sanctions package against Russia. The EU adopted this sanctions package on April 22.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico discussed strengthening ties and Slovakia's support for Ukraine's EU membership. The leaders plan to meet soon and exchange visits, reflecting a commitment to cooperation amid ongoing regional tensions.
