Russian troops are facing significant casualties as they attempt to infiltrate the city of Kupiansk using damaged gas pipelines as cover. Reports indicate that losses can reach as high as 70% during these attempts.
According to Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the Joint Forces Group, the ongoing efforts by Russian forces to breach defenses near Kupiansk are not yielding positive results. He mentioned in a comment to Suspilne that the pipelines are in a state of severe disrepair, making the operations increasingly perilous for the attackers.
“I had hoped they would cease these attempts near Kupiansk, as the pipes are essentially destroyed. They are trying to maneuver through Golubivka, where one of the pipelines runs. The losses just to cross this pipeline can reach 70%, yet they continue to try,” Trehubov stated.
Trehubov speculated that Russian forces might view these assaults as more advantageous compared to open field attacks, as the pipelines offer some degree of cover. He noted that while some sections of the pipeline are damaged, others still provide some protection, making it difficult to completely neutralize the structure.
The spokesperson also emphasized that Russian troops are actively working to reduce the foothold on the left bank of the Oskil River, aiming to advance towards both Kupiansk and Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi.
It is important to note that Russian forces began utilizing these devastated gas pipelines as a tactical approach to reach Kupiansk last year. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have consistently thwarted these strategies by either detonating or flooding the pipelines.
In the Kupiansk area, there are several pipelines, with three out of four already damaged and submerged. The remaining pipeline’s exit is under the control of Ukrainian defense forces.
Russian military attempts to advance near Kupiansk via damaged gas pipelines have resulted in heavy casualties. Ukrainian forces continue to counter these efforts effectively.
