Trump Announces Three-Week Extension of Ceasefire Between Israel and Lebanon

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon following discussions with representatives from both nations. This decision comes despite renewed violence along the Israeli-Lebanese border.

On April 23, Trump shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the meeting with the envoys was productive. He stated, “The United States will work with Lebanon to help it defend itself against Hezbollah.” The ceasefire was initially set to expire on April 26.

Hezbollah, a militant group and political party backed by Iran, controls significant territory in southern Lebanon and is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States. The European Union has only blacklisted its armed wing.

The Lebanese government has not actively participated in the ongoing conflict and has pledged to disarm Hezbollah. Trump expressed eagerness for upcoming meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Michel Aoun.

In his remarks, Trump noted that he, Vice President Jay D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and U.S. ambassadors to Israel and Lebanon were involved in discussions with senior officials from both countries. The Lebanese ambassador to the U.S., Nada Hamadeh Moawad, and the Israeli ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, represented their respective nations during the negotiations.

Trump’s statements were made in the context of escalating violence near the Israeli-Lebanese border, where both sides exchanged fire amid accusations of violations of an existing ten-day ceasefire that had been declared on April 16. This marked the first negotiations between the leaders of Israel and Lebanon since 1993.

On April 9, Netanyahu expressed Israel’s desire to engage in direct talks with Lebanon as soon as possible. Prior to this, President Aoun stated that the only solution to the situation in Lebanon was to achieve a ceasefire with Israel, followed by direct negotiations.

Netanyahu had previously rejected a proposal for direct talks with Lebanon in March. His recent statement came amid widespread international criticism of Israeli strikes, which Tehran claims violated a ceasefire agreement reached by the U.S. and Iran on April 8. Both the U.S. and Israel assert that this agreement does not apply to Lebanon.

President Trump has announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, despite ongoing violence along the border. The announcement follows discussions with representatives from both countries and highlights the complex dynamics involving Hezbollah and regional tensions.
