Russian Intelligence Recruitment of Minors Linked to School Shooting Incidents in Ukraine

Recent incidents in Ukraine have highlighted a troubling trend involving the recruitment of minors by Russian intelligence services. In one case, a ninth-grade student in Chop opened fire during a class, injuring a classmate. Authorities have indicated that the student was reportedly recruited through online gaming platforms.

In a separate incident in the Tiachiv region, a 15-year-old attempted to attack a school with a knife, planning to stream the event live. He was apprehended while trying to enter the school premises. Both cases have been linked to interactions that began in online gaming environments.

Yaroslav Kolesnyk, head of the Transcarpathian police, emphasized the targeted approach of adversarial forces, stating, “The enemy is deliberately working with the most vulnerable audience—minors. They employ covert methods of influence in environments where children feel safe, such as social networks and online games.”

According to previous reports from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), nearly 22% of individuals recruited by Russian intelligence for operations in Ukraine are minors. This statistic underscores the significant risk posed to young people in the current geopolitical climate.

A report by the investigative project Schemes, affiliated with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, revealed that Russian intelligence has been actively utilizing Ukrainian minors for acts of arson targeting military vehicles and recruitment centers. This strategy appears to be part of a broader disinformation campaign aimed at portraying an active underground movement in Ukraine opposing general mobilization.

Recent school shooting incidents in Ukraine have been linked to the recruitment of minors by Russian intelligence services through online platforms. Authorities report a concerning trend where vulnerable youth are targeted for involvement in violent acts as part of broader disinformation strategies.
