The European Commission is set to propose a voluntary fuel-sharing initiative among EU member states in response to potential aviation fuel shortages at European airports. This concern arises from a significant reduction in jet fuel imports linked to the ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf.
In Brussels, officials are preparing a crisis management plan that encourages coordination among EU countries to redistribute jet fuel. The goal is to enable nations with surplus supplies to assist those facing shortages, thereby minimizing disruptions to airline operations.
The urgency of the situation has escalated as imports of aviation fuel to Europe have halved due to the conflict in the Persian Gulf. Currently, EU countries are only able to produce approximately 70% of the fuel needed to maintain stable air travel operations. As a result, some airlines have already been compelled to cancel flights.
EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas has indicated that the situation is being closely monitored, noting that member states possess strategic reserves that could be utilized if necessary. He added that while there are no immediate signs of a fuel shortage, the aviation fuel market is under considerable strain.
Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, has warned that under current circumstances, fuel supplies could begin to dwindle within approximately six weeks.
The European Commission is expected to unveil its action plan on April 22, which will also propose the establishment of a dedicated fuel observatory to collect data on fuel availability across Europe. Additionally, member states may be advised to encourage airlines to conserve fuel and provide subsidies to mitigate the effects of temporary price increases.
