Russian military forces have targeted energy infrastructure in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine, deploying around 20 drones in a coordinated strike on a local substation.
According to the head of the regional energy company, the assault was aimed specifically at crippling the area’s energy capabilities. The drones, identified as Shahed-type, were used in a significant attack that underscores the ongoing threat to Ukraine’s energy security.
Olexiy Sheketa, the director of Zhytomyroblenergo, expressed strong condemnation of the aggressors, stating that the Ukrainian energy sector is a persistent thorn in the side of the enemy. He remarked, “Our energy is like a bone in their throat. May that bone remain until it chokes them! We know what to do.”
The recent attack is part of a broader pattern of intensified assaults by Russian forces. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga warned that Russia is preparing to escalate its terror tactics, potentially executing up to seven large-scale attacks each month. Intelligence reports indicate that each of these operations could involve at least 400 drones and 20 missiles.
Additionally, during a recent bombardment on April 16, Russian forces employed a novel attack strategy, launching an unprecedented number of ballistic missiles simultaneously while altering the timing of their cruise missile launches.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that during the latest wave of attacks, Ukrainian defenders successfully intercepted all incoming cruise missiles, including those targeted at energy facilities. However, he cautioned that the energy system remains at risk due to the high frequency of these assaults.
Russian forces have intensified their attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, launching a significant drone strike in the Zhytomyr region. Officials warn of an increase in such assaults, posing ongoing threats to the country's energy security.
