Ukrainian MP Faces Legal Troubles Over Alleged Illegal Enrichment

The High Anti-Corruption Court in Ukraine has set bail at 3 million hryvnias for Alexander Kachny, a member of the Opposition Platform for Life party, who is under investigation for alleged illegal enrichment.

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Roman Kymlyk from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office requested a bail amount of 12.7 million hryvnias, equivalent to 4,207 taxable minimums. However, the court partially granted the request, determining the bail at 3 million hryvnias. In addition to the financial requirement, Kachny is obligated to behave appropriately and respond to summons from investigators or judges.

Kachny’s attorney, Oleg Slobodyanik, stated that they will not appeal the court’s decision and will proceed to pay the bail.

The investigation into Kachny began on April 5, when the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) announced suspicions of illegal enrichment against him. The bureau alleges that Kachny unlawfully acquired assets totaling nearly 13 million hryvnias between 2020 and 2021, a sum significantly exceeding his officially declared income.

According to NABU, Kachny used these funds to purchase a cottage and land on the Black Sea coast in the village of Koblevo, as well as a 132.6 square meter apartment in central Kyiv.

He has been charged under Article 368-5 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, facing potential penalties of up to 10 years in prison and a ban from holding certain positions or engaging in specific activities for up to three years.

Ukrainian MP Alexander Kachny has been granted bail of 3 million hryvnias as he faces allegations of illegal enrichment. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau claims he unlawfully acquired assets worth nearly 13 million hryvnias, far exceeding his declared income.
