UK and France to Discuss Naval Initiative for Strait of Hormuz Security

The United Kingdom and France are set to convene a summit aimed at establishing a naval force to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This initiative, termed the “Maritime Initiative for Freedom of Navigation,” is expected to focus solely on defensive measures.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the global responsibility to ensure the immediate and unconditional opening of the strait. However, European leaders have made it clear that they do not intend to assist in forcibly reopening the waterway, contrary to calls from U.S. President Donald Trump. The mission’s deployment will commence when conditions allow.

Trump has previously criticized NATO and specifically called out Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron for their reluctance to support U.S. efforts against Iran. He urged allies to “summon delayed courage” and take decisive action in the strait. In contrast, European nations prefer to wait for a long-term agreement between the U.S. and Iran to resolve the ongoing conflict that began in late February.

On Thursday, Trump stated that the prospects for a deal with Iran look promising, suggesting that Tehran is ready to make significant concessions to extend the ceasefire. However, some Arab and European leaders consider this assessment overly optimistic, estimating that a peaceful resolution could take around six months to achieve.

Commercial shipping companies have expressed skepticism about the possibility of securing safe passage through the strait until the conflict is fully resolved.

The UK and France are planning a summit to discuss a naval initiative aimed at ensuring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. While the mission is framed as defensive, differing views on intervention strategies and the timeline for a peace agreement with Iran reflect ongoing geopolitical tensions.
