Ukraine and Hungary Prepare for Diplomatic Engagement Under New Leadership

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has initiated contact with Anita Orbán, who is set to become Hungary’s new foreign minister under Prime Minister Péter Madár’s administration. This communication marks a significant step towards renewed diplomatic relations between the two nations.

According to Fedor Shandor, Ukraine’s ambassador to Hungary, the interaction between Sybiha and Orbán has conveyed a positive diplomatic signal. Shandor explained that the two officials exchanged greetings and optimistic narratives, paving the way for official dialogue once Madár assumes his role as prime minister.

In response to inquiries about potential discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Madár, Shandor indicated that any formal conversation would likely occur after May 11, coinciding with the inaugural session of Hungary’s new parliament. “Thus, official communications between the Hungarian and Ukrainian sides are expected to take place on May 11 or 12,” he added.

Background:

  • On April 12, Zelensky congratulated the opposition party Tisza and its leader Péter Madár on their electoral victory in Hungary.
  • Madár has expressed a desire to foster friendly relations with Ukraine and has opposed imposing peace conditions on the country.

For further insights, an interview with Ambassador Shandor will be available soon on the European Truth website.

The recent communication between Ukraine's Foreign Minister and Hungary's incoming foreign minister signals a potential thaw in relations, with formal discussions expected after Hungary's parliamentary session. This development follows a recent electoral victory for the opposition party in Hungary, which aims to strengthen ties with Ukraine.
