U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that leaders from Israel and Lebanon may engage in direct discussions for the first time in 34 years. This announcement was made via Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, on Wednesday.
Trump suggested that the talks could take place as early as Thursday. However, officials from both Israel and Lebanon have not yet confirmed this information. Lebanese President Michel Aoun emphasized that a ceasefire must be a prerequisite for initiating direct negotiations between the two nations.
“A ceasefire, requested by Lebanon with Israel, is a natural starting point for direct talks between the two countries,” stated President Aoun.
This marks the first public acknowledgment by a leader regarding the potential for negotiations, as highlighted by Trump. Israeli Minister of Science and Technology, Ofir Akunis, noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Aoun might issue statements during the day.
According to Lebanese media outlet Al-Jadeed, efforts are currently underway to arrange a three-way phone call involving Netanyahu, Aoun, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussions are expected to focus on establishing a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and initiating steps that could lead to formal agreements.
This announcement follows the first direct diplomatic negotiations between Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington since 1993. Reports indicate that Lebanon is seeking to halt Israeli strikes within its territory.
Escalation of Conflict
The potential talks occur amid heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group. In early March, Hezbollah launched rockets and drones at Israel, prompting extensive Israeli military responses in Lebanon and a ground operation in the southern region.
Humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations, report that over 1.2 million people in Lebanon have been displaced due to the conflict, with approximately 820,000 fleeing from southern areas. Satellite imagery and video analysis from BBC Verify reveal significant destruction in border towns, with more than 1,400 buildings reportedly destroyed since early March. Legal experts suggest that the systematic demolition of these areas could amount to war crimes.

On February 28, Israel conducted an attack on Tehran, prompting President Trump to announce a “major military operation” against Iran aimed at eliminating perceived threats from the Iranian regime. He accused Iranian authorities of funding and training militants in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine.
Trump stated that the operation aims to dismantle Iran’s missile industry and naval capabilities to prevent global destabilization. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for launching missiles and drones towards Israel and attacking U.S. military bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The European Union reiterated its commitment to ensuring regional security and stability in the Middle East. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for giving Iranians a chance to rid themselves of a “terrorist regime” and ensure safety for all nations affected by Iranian attacks.

On March 8, Iran’s Assembly of Experts appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the slain ayatollah, as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
On March 26, Trump announced a suspension of attacks on Iranian energy facilities until April 6. However, due to a lack of progress in negotiations, he extended the deadline by 20 hours to the evening of April 7.
