Russia Enhances Air Defense Strategies Amid Drone Attacks

Ukrainian military experts are reporting significant changes in Russia’s air defense tactics as the country faces increasing drone strikes. The focus has shifted toward bolstering the effectiveness of surface-to-air missile systems to protect critical infrastructure.

In response to the ongoing drone threats, Russian authorities are prioritizing the defense of vital sites and regions using existing air defense complexes. However, a notable shortage of the ‘Pantsir’ systems has emerged, limiting their coverage across Russian territory.

This scarcity has compelled Russia to explore alternative solutions and redistribute resources to enhance its air defense capabilities. Reports indicate the emergence of hybrid air defense systems, such as a mobile launch platform spotted in the city of Oryol, located 368 kilometers southwest of Moscow. This platform utilizes R-77-1 air-to-air missiles, reflecting an adaptation of existing technologies to meet new operational challenges.

Ukrainian defense forces have been actively targeting Russian ‘Pantsir’ complexes, achieving significant results. Vasyl Maliuk, head of Ukraine’s Security Service, noted during a briefing with President Volodymyr Zelensky that despite the high level of Russian air defense, the ‘Pantsir’ systems remain the most effective against Ukrainian long-range drones.

Maliuk stated, “Since the beginning of 2025, we have destroyed 48% of enemy ‘Pantsirs.’ This remains a priority as defined by the President of Ukraine.” The ongoing conflict continues to shape the tactical landscape, with both sides adapting their strategies in response to evolving threats.

Ukrainian military experts report that Russia is adapting its air defense strategies in response to increased drone attacks. The shortage of 'Pantsir' systems has led to the development of hybrid air defense solutions, while Ukrainian forces have successfully targeted these complexes.
