The Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has publicly criticized American negotiators for what he describes as “double standards,” claiming this is a significant barrier to reaching a potential agreement to end ongoing conflicts. His remarks were made during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as reported by the Iranian presidential administration on April 12.
Pezeshkian stated, “During the negotiations in Islamabad, the US maintained its double standards, and their political ambitions have become the biggest obstacles.” He reiterated Iran’s commitment to achieving lasting peace in the region, asserting, “An agreement is certainly possible, but the US must adhere to internationally recognized rules and international law.”
Earlier that day, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of failing to uphold its promises regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He announced orders for US armed forces to blockade this critical waterway and to intercept any vessels that have paid fees to Tehran.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump expressed confidence that Iran would return to the negotiating table, stating, “They haven’t left the table. I predict they will come back and give us everything we want. I told my people I want it all. I don’t want 90%, I don’t want 95%. I told them I want everything. They have no cards left.”
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded by asserting its full control over the Strait and warned that Tehran’s adversaries would face dire consequences for any miscalculations.
Negotiations between US and Iranian representatives on April 11 in Islamabad ended without agreement, primarily due to disagreements over several key issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which were highlighted by US Vice President Jay D. Vance as a major hurdle.
