Ukraine Secures Release of 182 Individuals from Captivity Amid Easter Ceasefire

On April 11, 2026, Ukraine successfully negotiated the release of 175 military personnel and 7 civilians from Russian captivity. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the Ukrainian side would observe a ceasefire during the Easter period, while also stating that any provocations would be met with a reciprocal response.

During a Telegram update, President Zelensky emphasized that the parameters for responding to potential violations of the ceasefire by Russia had been established. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to maintaining peace during the holiday.

The recent exchange involved individuals who had been detained since 2022, including defenders from Mariupol and Chernobyl. Among the released military personnel were 25 officers, previously deemed non-exchangeable by Russia. The Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters noted that although efforts were made to secure the release of more individuals, Russia declined to cooperate.

As the Easter celebrations continued, the Holy Fire descended at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, marking a significant event for many Christians worldwide.

In related international news, indirect talks between the United States and Iran were facilitated by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The discussions, which did not involve direct communication between the parties, focused on Iran’s demands, including control over the Strait of Hormuz and the release of frozen assets. The U.S. delegation was led by Vice President J.D. Vance, while the Iranian side was represented by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Negotiations also included considerations for a ceasefire and the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz, with reports indicating that the U.S. might return approximately $6 billion in frozen assets to Iran. Additionally, U.S. naval vessels have reportedly entered the Strait of Hormuz for the first time since the onset of the conflict with Iran.

In a separate development, the Iranian military is facing challenges in fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz due to the presence of mines, which they are unable to locate or neutralize effectively. Meanwhile, two Chinese supertankers have recently passed through the strait, following the transit of a Greek vessel.

On the ground in Ukraine, the General Staff of the Armed Forces announced a ceasefire for the Easter period, allowing for defensive actions should Russian forces prepare for assaults. Reports indicated that Russian troops launched 50 attacks on April 11, with the most intense fighting occurring in the Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk directions.

Ukrainian forces successfully struck a fuel depot and three ammunition storage sites, while also regaining control over territory near the village of Ambarne in the Kharkiv region. Meanwhile, Russian forces have been observed establishing a new drone launch site in the city of Orel.

As the conflict continues, both sides remain vigilant, with Ukraine’s military coordinating further operations to ensure effective defense.

Ukraine has successfully secured the release of 182 individuals from Russian captivity while observing a ceasefire during Easter. The ongoing conflict sees both sides preparing for potential escalations, with significant military actions reported.
