Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Bureau Concludes Investigation into Political Leader

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) have completed their preliminary investigation into a prominent political figure, suspected of bribing parliament members. Although the authorities have not disclosed the name of the individual involved, documents suggest that it pertains to Yulia Tymoshenko, the leader of the Batkivshchyna party.

According to the investigation, in December of the previous year, Tymoshenko allegedly began negotiations with certain lawmakers regarding a system of rewards for favorable voting. This arrangement reportedly involved a structured mechanism for collaboration, where parliamentarians were expected to follow directives on how to vote—either in favor, against, or abstaining.

The formal charges were announced on January 14, 2026, marking a significant moment in a case that has drawn considerable public interest. In response to the allegations, Tymoshenko characterized the searches conducted at her office as a publicity stunt and a politically motivated attack.

On January 16, the High Anti-Corruption Court imposed a bail of over 33 million hryvnias on Tymoshenko, which was promptly paid on her behalf. Previously, she had claimed that her bank accounts were frozen, preventing her from covering the bail amount, and reiterated her stance that the case was politically driven.

Subsequently, on January 21, the court authorized the seizure of Tymoshenko’s assets that were confiscated during the searches, as well as properties registered under her husband’s name. However, the court also lifted the seizure of $6,300 that was taken during the NABU’s operations, returning the funds to the parliament member.

The NABU and SAP have concluded their investigation into Yulia Tymoshenko for allegedly bribing lawmakers. The case has seen significant developments, including bail and asset seizures amid claims of political motivation.
