Russian Oil Refinery Temporarily Shuts Down Following Drone Attack

The Нижегороднефтеоргсинтез oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest, has halted operations after a drone strike attributed to Ukrainian forces on April 5. This development has been reported by Reuters, citing industry sources.

According to sources, the refinery’s supply chain may be disrupted until the end of the month. Lukoil, the company that owns the facility, has not responded to requests for comment.

The temporary closure of the refinery is expected to exacerbate uncertainties within Russia’s energy sector, which has already been affected by ongoing Ukrainian attacks targeting key oil export terminals in the Black and Baltic Seas.

Following the drone strike, Lukoil ceased the sale of gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil produced at Нижегороднефтеоргсинтез. Gleb Nikitin, the governor of Nizhny Novgorod region, confirmed that two facilities within the refinery were hit, resulting in damage to a power station and several nearby buildings.

Нижегороднефтеоргсинтез is the second-largest gasoline producer in Russia, with a processing capacity of 16 million tons of oil annually, equating to approximately 320,000 barrels per day.

On the same day, Ukrainian drone forces targeted the Transneft oil terminal in Primorsk, Leningrad region, as well as the Lukoil-owned Нижегороднефтеоргсинтез facility in Kstovo, Russia.

The Нижегороднефтеоргсинтез oil refinery in Russia has suspended operations following a drone attack, further complicating the country's energy landscape. The facility's closure may disrupt oil supplies and reflects ongoing vulnerabilities in Russia's energy infrastructure amid continued hostilities.
