Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Merezhko has stated that the country possesses sufficient human resources to sustain military operations for up to ten years or more. In a recent interview, Merezhko emphasized that his comments were focused on Ukraine’s mobilization capacity rather than a prediction of the war’s length. He highlighted the importance of psychological factors in motivating citizens to join the armed forces, particularly among those who may be hesitant to enlist.
“We are dealing with about 1.5 to 2 million individuals who are avoiding conscription. If we consider that around 100,000 to 200,000 are actively engaged in combat, the mobilization resource allows us to potentially sustain military efforts for a decade,” he explained. Merezhko’s calculations suggest that encouraging these individuals to join the military is crucial for maintaining operational strength.
He further noted that the primary challenge lies in convincing those who are reluctant to serve by offering clear prospects for rotation and future planning. Merezhko asserted that if potential recruits understood they would only be deployed for a limited time, they might be more inclined to enlist.
“The mobilization resource is a theoretical category and does not dictate how long the war will last. It could end tomorrow or continue for several more years; no one can predict that,” he stated.
