Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently engaged in discussions with American negotiators, including Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Senator Lindsey Graham, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The conversations focused on enhancing diplomatic efforts, security guarantees, and involving European partners in the ongoing peace process.
In his evening address, Zelensky emphasized the importance of a potential Easter truce, stating, “We need different signals, and silence on Easter could serve as a message that diplomacy can succeed. Ukraine is doing everything possible to support the peace efforts.” He reiterated the necessity of strengthening diplomatic ties and security assurances for Ukraine.
Zelensky expressed gratitude to the U.S. representatives for their willingness to collaborate and find appropriate compromises. He stressed the significance of clear communication regarding how allies would respond to any renewed Russian aggression, highlighting the need for a unified stance among partners.
The president noted that his team would work promptly to update security documents, ensuring they are robust and relevant to the current global context. “Ukraine must receive reliable security, and that is our primary task,” he stated.
On March 21 and 22, negotiations took place in Miami between U.S. and Ukrainian delegations as part of Washington’s efforts to reach a peaceful resolution. The Ukrainian team, led by Rustem Umerov, included key figures such as Kirill Budanov and David Arakhamia.
Following the first day of talks, Zelensky reported a productive meeting with Witkoff and Kushner, where they focused on aligning approaches to achieve practical outcomes. Umerov highlighted that discussions emphasized reliable security guarantees and humanitarian issues, including the exchange and return of Ukrainian citizens.
On March 23, Witkoff described the negotiations as “constructive,” focusing on establishing a sustainable security framework for Ukraine and addressing vital humanitarian concerns in the region. Zelensky noted that there were indications of possible continued exchanges, which he deemed a positive sign for diplomatic efforts.
Earlier, on February 17-18, trilateral talks were held in Geneva involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, aimed at concluding the ongoing conflict. Umerov reported that discussions were centered on practical issues and potential solutions, with significant progress acknowledged by U.S. representatives.
During these Geneva talks, Umerov met separately with representatives from the U.S., France, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland to synchronize approaches for future steps. The Russian delegation described the discussions as challenging but constructive, with both sides agreeing to provide updated information to their leaders.
As the negotiations continue, Zelensky remains hopeful for tangible progress, emphasizing the importance of a united front in addressing security challenges and ensuring Ukraine’s stability.
