The European Union is actively working to finalize its 20th sanctions package against Russia, with discussions set to continue at the upcoming European Council meeting. High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, made this announcement during her visit to Bucha, Ukraine, on March 31.
Kallas noted that there are currently some obstacles hindering the approval of the sanctions package and the disbursement of loans. “We are facing challenges regarding the 20th sanctions package, and unfortunately, I cannot share any good news today. We are still working on it and hope to reach a decision at the next European Council meeting, scheduled for June 19-20, 2026,” she stated.
During a previous meeting on February 23, EU foreign ministers failed to reach an agreement on the sanctions package. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had indicated that Hungary would block the approval of the sanctions until the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored.
Kallas’s visit to Kyiv coincided with a tribute to the victims of Russian occupation in Bucha, underscoring the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine during this ongoing conflict.
