Bulgaria Joins U.S. Arms Procurement Program for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Bulgaria will join the U.S.-led PURL program, aimed at facilitating arms procurement for Ukraine from European nations. This announcement was made during a press conference with Bulgaria’s acting Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov.

Zelensky expressed gratitude for Bulgaria’s participation, stating,

“I appreciate the positive signal that Bulgaria is joining the PURL program. Primarily, this is an important signal. Secondly, it provides us with an opportunity to strengthen our air defense strategy ahead of the upcoming heating season.”

Gyurov confirmed Bulgaria’s commitment to the PURL initiative. Earlier, the two leaders signed a bilateral security agreement that emphasizes military support from Bulgaria to Ukraine.

Following the signing, Zelensky remarked,

“We have signed a security agreement between our countries. Key points include the continuation of military assistance from Bulgaria to Ukraine and joint production of various weapons, including drones, on our territories. Bulgaria will utilize the SAFE program for such co-production.”

The agreement also outlines Bulgaria’s involvement in the PURL program for enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and supports Ukraine’s aspirations for European Union membership.
