The U.S. Coast Guard has permitted a Russian tanker laden with crude oil to approach Cuba, providing the island with a vital energy supply following a prolonged blockade.
According to MarineTraffic, a maritime data provider, the tanker, which carries approximately 730,000 barrels of oil, was reported near Cuba on Sunday. The vessel, traveling at a speed of 12 knots, was expected to enter Cuban waters by Sunday evening and could reach its destination in Matanzas, Cuba, by Tuesday.
While the U.S. Coast Guard has two vessels in the region that could have attempted to intercept the Russian tanker, an anonymous U.S. official indicated that the Trump administration did not issue orders for intervention.
Analysts suggest that the arrival of the Russian vessel will alleviate Cuba’s energy crisis, as the island’s oil reserves were nearing depletion. This development may also reduce pressure on the Cuban government, which is grappling with an impending economic crisis and escalating threats from Washington. Furthermore, it signals that Cuba can still rely on its longstanding ally, Russia.
The backdrop to this situation includes a U.S. policy implemented by the Trump administration in January, which effectively established a form of oil blockade around Cuba. This policy threatened tariffs on countries supplying fuel to the island.

Simultaneously, White House officials have publicly threatened the Cuban government while covertly encouraging the removal of President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
It is worth noting that a previous Russian tanker bound for Cuba had to turn back following warnings from the U.S., according to media reports. Following military operations in Venezuela, Trump has made remarks suggesting that Cuba could be the next target for U.S. intervention.
