Poland Extends Temporary Border Controls with Germany and Lithuania Until 2026

The Polish government has decided to extend temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October 1, 2026. This measure is in response to what officials describe as a serious threat of illegal migration along these borders.

This information was reported by Polish Radio, referencing an order from the Minister of Interior and Administration. Border checks will be conducted by border guards in collaboration with police and the Territorial Defense Forces at a minimum of 63 checkpoints, including approximately 50 along the German border and 13 along the Lithuanian border.

Notably, the checks will return to the Młodzikowski crossing, which is significant for tourism, pedestrian, and cycling traffic, as well as for cross-border activities in the park.

These border controls were initially implemented on July 7, 2025, and have been extended multiple times since then. According to the Schengen Borders Code, EU member states are permitted to reinstate checks at internal borders for up to six months in the event of a serious threat to public order or internal security.

“If such a threat persists for more than six months, the country may extend controls for additional periods of no more than six months, but not exceeding a total of two years. In this case, prior notification to other member states, the European Parliament, the Council, and the European Commission is required,” the statement noted.

The new regulations will take effect on April 5, 2026.

Poland has announced an extension of border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October 2026, citing concerns over illegal migration. The checks will involve multiple agencies and will be implemented at numerous checkpoints, reinforcing security measures in the region.
