Ukraine to Implement Driver Penalty Points System

The Ukrainian government is set to introduce a penalty points system for drivers, aimed at improving road safety and compliance with traffic regulations. This initiative was announced by Volodymyr Kreidenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament from the Servant of the People party, during a broadcast on the Rada television channel.

Kreidenko indicated that the legislation could be passed within the year, addressing concerns over frequent traffic violations. He noted that some drivers exceed speed limits multiple times daily, often evading consequences despite paying fines. The proposed system would assign points for each infraction, with a threshold of 15 points leading to the suspension of a driver’s license.

Under the new regulations, drivers who accumulate 15 points over the course of a year would be required to retake driving tests and undergo training to regain their driving privileges. Kreidenko highlighted that similar systems have been successfully implemented in countries such as the United States, Germany, France, and Poland, suggesting that they have led to improved driver behavior.

Current Fines for Speeding

In Ukraine, existing penalties for speeding include a fine of 340 UAH for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h and 1,700 UAH for exceeding it by more than 50 km/h. Drivers can receive a 50% discount on fines if paid within 10 banking days, with a total payment period of 30 days.

Additionally, the Ukrainian government has recently integrated parking violation fines into the Diia app, which is currently available in seven cities, including Lviv and Dnipro, with plans for expansion to other areas.

Ukraine plans to introduce a penalty points system for drivers to enhance road safety by suspending licenses for repeated traffic violations. The initiative aims to address frequent speeding and improve compliance with traffic laws.
