U.S. Secretary of State Discusses Potential Redirection of Military Aid Amid Middle East Tensions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that while the United States has not yet redirected military aid intended for Ukraine to the Middle East, such a move could be considered if necessary. His comments came following a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Le Bourget, France, on March 27, 2026.

Rubio clarified to reporters that the weaponry in question is part of military sales and supplies funded by NATO, emphasizing that the U.S. would prioritize its own military needs. He stated, “This is not redirected weaponry; this is our weaponry. The question is whether we will have a military necessity to replenish our stocks or fulfill any mission in the national interest of the United States. We will always prioritize our own needs when it comes to our weapons.”

“So I have nothing to announce; I cannot say this is happening right now, but it could happen. It has always been a possibility. If we need something for America, and it is American, we will keep it for America first. But at this moment, that has not occurred,” Rubio added.

Contextually, Rubio’s remarks follow a report from The Washington Post on March 26, which stated that the Pentagon is considering reallocating military assistance designated for Ukraine due to the depletion of critical munitions amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in Iran. This includes interceptors for air defense systems ordered under the PURL program.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte affirmed that the U.S. weaponry ordered under the PURL initiative, including air defense systems and their missiles, will continue to be supplied to Ukraine despite the escalating situation in the Middle East. He also highlighted the need for Europe to increase its own arms production.

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to NATO, Alona Hetmanchuk, expressed concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could lead to a shortage of air defense resources under the PURL program. However, she noted that Kyiv has not received indications that the military supplies intended for Ukraine might be redirected to the Middle East.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that while no military aid for Ukraine has been redirected to the Middle East, such a decision could be made if necessary. This comes amid concerns about military resource shortages due to ongoing conflicts in the region.
