Trump and Putin Set for Key Visits to Beijing in May 2026

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing on May 14-15, according to the South China Morning Post. The White House confirmed the dates on Wednesday, following a delay caused by the ongoing conflict involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran.

As of now, Beijing has not officially confirmed the visit. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian noted on Thursday that discussions regarding the trip are ongoing, but did not provide further details.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit, as reported by the Kremlin since February, is planned for the first half of 2026. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko stated on Tuesday that the exact dates are being finalized and will be announced soon. Sources from the South China Morning Post suggest that Putin’s visit may occur in May, following Trump’s.

The simultaneous visits of the U.S. and Russian leaders are viewed by Chinese analysts as a rare occurrence. The last time Beijing hosted presidents from both nations in the same month was during the Soviet era.

Experts believe this diplomatic double-header reflects China’s strategic ambition to manage its relationships with both major powers amid increasing global instability. Beijing aims to maintain a delicate balance, avoiding excessive dependence on either Washington or Moscow.

The Trump administration sees this visit as a chance to discuss trade relations, technology, and security issues. For Putin, the trip to Beijing will serve as another indication of the strength of the Russian-Chinese partnership in the face of Western sanctions.

Donald Trump's upcoming visit to Beijing in May 2026, alongside Vladimir Putin's planned trip, marks a significant diplomatic moment for China. These visits reflect China's efforts to balance its relationships with both the U.S. and Russia amid global tensions.
