German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his approach to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Merz expressed skepticism about the likelihood of regime change in Iran, indicating that current actions do not represent de-escalation but rather a significant escalation with uncertain outcomes.
Merz stated, “These escalations pose a threat, not only to those directly involved but to all of us. Is the goal truly regime change? If so, I do not believe they will achieve it. Such attempts have mostly ended in failure.” He also questioned whether the military operations by the U.S. and Israel against Iran are nearing their conclusion.
Previously, Trump had criticized Merz for suggesting that Berlin does not consider the U.S. war with Iran its concern, to which Trump retorted, “Ukraine is not our war.”
