U.S. Secretary of State Meets with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the G7 ministerial meeting in France. The discussions focused on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the current situation in the Middle East.

Sybiha emphasized the critical role of the United States in advancing peace efforts, stating, “U.S. involvement is essential. Ukraine’s proposals are realistic and feasible. Pressuring Russia is key to compelling Moscow to end the war.” He also addressed the cooperation between the regimes in Moscow and Tehran, asserting that both should face consolidated pressure.

He noted that Ukraine’s practical assistance to Gulf states in countering Iranian threats illustrates its role as a security partner. Sybiha reiterated that countering Russian aggression against Ukraine should remain a priority on the international agenda.

As of now, U.S.-mediated negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine have effectively stalled. Several rounds of trilateral meetings involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia took place in January and February, but no significant outcomes were reported.

The only notable achievement during this period was a prisoner exchange agreement reached on February 5, the first in five months. A subsequent meeting scheduled for early March in Abu Dhabi was postponed indefinitely due to the conflict in Iran.

On March 21-22, bilateral talks occurred between Ukrainian and American delegations in Miami without Russian participation. Following these discussions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that no real progress had been made in the peace process, attributing this to Russia’s reluctance to resolve the conflict.

The Kremlin has also issued statements regarding the negotiations between the U.S. and Ukraine. Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed that negotiations to end the war in Ukraine have reached an impasse. He remains hopeful that U.S. President Donald Trump will maintain focus on the conflict and uphold his commitment to ending the war, despite being preoccupied with the situation in Iran.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East during a recent meeting. While U.S.-mediated negotiations for a ceasefire have stalled, both officials underscored the importance of continued international pressure on Russia.
